Jokhang monastery

The Jokhang monastery, also called the Tsuklakang, is the first buddhist monastery built in Tibet. Situated in the Barkhor district, the monastery is the spiritual heart of Lhassa and is major pilgrimage site. This monastery was command by the Tibetan king, Songtsen Gampo in 639 to shelter the Jowo statue. The staute represents the young Buddha and was supposedly carved during his lifetime, it is completly gold and is decorated with glittering jewels. It is the most sacred relic for Tibetans.
The monastery is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
