
Mogado Cave


Situated in cliffs of the Gansu district, in Dachuan, in the South East of the Dunhuang oasis, the Mogao caves host since the IVe Century the largest collection of Buddhist art jewels. The 492 visible caves offers 45.000 square meters of mural painting and more than 2.000 painted statues. The first caves weren't larger than coffins, the nickname 1.000 Buddhas come from these caves. These caves were significant place of worship on the silk road.
The most famous caves are :
- the cave 16, which is a double cave dating of the Tang dynasty.
- the cave 17, which is the well-know walled library dating as well of the Tang dynasty
- the cave 46 which boasts a lying Buddha surrounded by thousand Buddha effigy.
The caves are the first Chinese site listed on the UNESCO World Heritage, in 1987.
